Hex Pro Termite Baiting System (Sentricon) Uses / Application:
Complete in-ground termite baiting system that combines a termite monitoring station (Hex Pro Termite Bait Station) with a termite bait toxicant (Shatter Termite Bait Cartridges) to kill subterranean termites and their colonies. This system is effective against coptotermes, reticulitermes, and heterotermes spp. and is intended to form the basis of an ongoing program. Use of this system involves 3 steps - (1) monitoring for the presence or activity of termites in and around the target site, (2) delivery of a slow-acting insect growth regulator (IGR) such as Shatter Termite Bait when and where the presence or activity of subterranean termites has been detected, and (3), resumption of monitoring for the presence of termites after control has been achieved.

Install (1) Hex Pro Termite Bait Station every 8-10 feet but not more than 20 feet around the outer perimeter of structures. Inspect every 30 - 90 days. When termites have been detected in the station, replace the monitoring wood with (1) Shatter Termite Bait cartridge. Re-inspect every 30 days, and replace the cartridge as it is consumed. Replace wood monitor detectors as needed or as damaged by insects or fungal decay.

Ron,
Thank you for the wonderful write up on Sentricon. I have read up on the system and feel it is a great choice. I am new to this issue, but have been thrust into research due to swarmers inside my home. I have had 2 companies identify the threat and offer Sentricon as the solution. I do believe I can purchase the plan through either company and feel good knowing the issue will be resolved. My question is this, I am looking at $1300 minimum to ge the system installed and $240 minimum per year for service. I am ok with this, however, I am a huge proponent for DIY and would like to discuss this method. I see you mention the Hex Pro and it is basically the same thing, so do I DIY or not? Here are my quick basic questions. What is truely different that would keep someone like me from installing my own hex pro over the professionals installing the sentricon? What does the housing resale market say about hexpro vs sentricon? Am I money ahead in the long run by letting someone else manage the yearly costs? I completely understand the companies are not going to lose money, so the annual fee is covering them, but is the hex pro more per year in comparrison to the annual contract price? Am I missing anything about either system that could be a big gotcha? final question, if I do the hexpro and then decide later to switch to use an annual service, would I incure the full installation fee or just annual renewals?

thank you for your time

I have answered your questions below -

What is truely different that would keep someone like me from installing my own hex pro over the professionals installing the sentricon?

Sentricon is a licensed product available to professionals only. Hex Pro is the retail version of Sentricon available without a license to professionals. Both products are considered professional use. Hex Pro comes without the constraints of licensing from Dow and contains the original Hexaflumuron Chitin Inhibitor VS Sentricon that… See full answer »

Does the Sentricon system always use Live bait in the stations, Or do you start it out with the wood bait blocks first (Like the Hex Pro) then the Shatter cartridge is installed after activity is discovered ? I know the two stations are very similiar--but could you explain the difference between them if there is any ? See more »

Sentricon with "Always Active" bait is only available through a licensed Sentricon Installer and under license from Dow Chemical. Hex Pro is the original Sentricon station but has a different lid and is gray. The bait is separate and is called "Shatter".

Basically with Hex Pro, you inspect the wood detectors and replace them with a Shatter Cartridge when termites are found in the stations. I would recommend to do this every 3 months March - October in most areas. If you live in the deep south, year round December inspections may be necessary.

If I were to provide a diagram of my home's perimeter could you mark the locations of where I need to place the bait stations ?

I currently have a professional pest control company's stations installed now at 15 foot intervals. (I believe it looks like your Advance system size wise)
According to what I read they should be no more than 10 Feet apart. There are also some patio slabs that were poured right up against the home's foundation (after the bait system was originally installed at the home builder's request by that company) which will not allow me to install a station at the proper intervals unless I drill a core hole in the concrete. So, I would really need the proper locations marked before I go thru that effort.
Also, the slabs cover an area over ten feet away from the home--Which I believe I also read the stations should be no more than five feet away from the foundation. See more »

There is no "proper placement" when installing termite bait stations. The reason is that termites can be actively foraging anywhere on the proper. So the proper placement would be anywhere termites could be foraging.

Basically, when installing termite bait stations, the "rule" is to place them no more than 10 feet apart. So in some areas they may be 8 feet, other areas could be less, but no more than 10 feet. 15 feet for the Advance Stations is too much in my opinion. The main point here is that you can place them anywhere - around the house, around the patio, along sidewalks, around storage sheds, along the fence. I do NOT recommend to drill cement or auger holes unless there is no other way possible to install them… See full answer »

Because the Shatter Bait is so expensive #1, and #2, because termites NEVER hit all the stations. Or at least not very often.

Generally, termites will infest only a couple of stations, and those are the ones that get bait. If you need more bait, you can always order more. Most customers never need more than what the kit includes.

the Hex Pro Termite Baiting System is for subterranean termites only. The bait stations are installed into the ground every 10 feet around the perimeter of the home or building, and just inside the roof edge or overhang. They are then inspected every 90 days and baited with Shatter Bait when termites appear.

Control and treatment depends on the species of termites and where you live. Subterranean or ground termites require a much different treatment than drywood or aerial termites. Let me know where you live (city, st) and what you are seeing and I can help guide you in the right direction.

I built a new house in 2020 & have Open Cell Spray Foam Insulation in the attic & exterior walls & there is only one local Termite Co that will bond my house & provide coverage but it is $1,000 a year. I currently have a Sentricon System & I am due for inspeciton & to renew.
I live in South Alabama, masonry brick home on a slab with no exposed wood except for a treated pool fence. Do you think I could/should use the Hex Pro system & is it possible for me to do it myself?
My whole life I've been told you need to have a termite bond & Sentricon is the best for our area, I truly don't care if I have a bond or not, I just want to keep my house safe for the next 20 years.
I really can't afford $1,000 every year but I can't afford to not be protected living where in South Alabama.
Any advice you may have would be so appreciated!!

I look forward to hearing from you & hope to get this resolved soon.
Sincerely,
Michelle See more »

There is no such thing as a termite bond. Get that out of your thinking. Terminix's termite guarantee is specifically stated on their contract. If you read the contract carefully and understand it, you will find that they really don't guarantee much of anything. And if you decide to sue, well, you signed away that right too. There is an arbitration clause attached.

Considering that Terminix in Alabama paid a $60 million dollar fine in 2020 for failing to do termite work at all on their customers homes.... it's up to you..... https://www.al.com/news/mobile/2020/1… See full answer »

In order for Hex Pro to work properly, pre-baiting has to be established with the wood detectors. Once the termites have fed on the wood detectors and about 50% is eaten, replace them with Shatter.

Shatter is not designed to last through the seasons like the new Sentricon Always active. In fact, when Shatter gets wet, it can get soft. So if the termites are not actively feeding at the station and you begin the process with Shatter instead of wood, you could end up spending a lot more money on bait.

2 3/4". Most people just use a sharpshooter and dig a hole that way and then back fill in around the station. There are commercially available tools available to "auger" a hole the exact size. Here is a link - http://www.ams-samplers.com/hand-tool...

I have drywood termites as well as subterranean and have been recommended to fumigate. Will that eradicate the subterranean as well? See more »

It will kill the termites in the house, but will not kill the termites underground. So they will return. Very quickly.

For subterranean termites, use either a liquid barrier (termidor or taurus sc) or a baiting system (hex pro termite baiting system). Here is a link to our page on how to kill termites -

10 cartridges will be enough around our new cabin built on 6"x6" pressure treated post about 1ft above ground but how many will use bait vs kill with supplied bait and kill cartridges? See more »

The kit comes with a box of (6) Shatter Bait Cartridges. Not all of the Hex Pro Stations will need bait. Typically, only a few Hex Pro Stations will get termite "hits" and need have Shatter installed. 6 Shatter cartridges is enough bait to kill an average size subterranean termite colony. Basically, when the Shatter cartridge is nearly empty, we recommend to replace it with a new cartridge. In most cases, Shatter cartridges never need to be replaced once installed.

Hope this helps.
